The Dragon Who Came To Tea

Yesterday I was at the elegant Gouqi Chinese restaurant just off Trafalgar Square. It was opened a year ago by the renowned Michelin-starred Chef Tong, formerly of the famous Hakkasan.

No, I wasn’t there to savour their lunch or dinner offerings, but to sample their amazing Dragon Afternoon Tea.

Chef Tong has taken the elements of a classic English afternoon tea, the three-tiered stand brimming with savouries, scones and then dessert, and given them a dramatic Chinese twist.

Everything was magically tasty and very healthy, even the vividly coloured dim sum being made from natural food colourings. After we had demolished the three layers of savouries, containing salads, fish and meat delicacies (one can order vegetarian and vegan options), along came the dessert stand with its diverse flavours of cinnamon, ginger, orange, mango, coffee, coconut and even black sesame.

All washed down with a pot of jasmine tea and the house Mu Long Cocktail (craft gin, melon, sake, and green tea essence just so you know).
